JUDGE HULTGREN SEEKS FOURTH TERM
Dearborn Judge William C. Hultgren confirmed this week that 2010 will see him seek a fourth consecutive term as 19th District Court judge.
He plans to formally launch his re-election campaign during a buffet breakfast program on April 13 from 7:00 – 9:30 a.m. at the TPC Clubhouse in Dearborn.
Following 17 years of service as Dearborn City Attorney, Hultgren was elected judge in his first run for public office in 1992. He ran unopposed for re-election in both 1998 and 2004.
“As an attorney and a lifetime Dearborn resident, I cannot think of any honor higher than having been afforded the opportunity to serve my hometown as judge,” said Hultgren.
He repeatedly has demonstrated his appreciation for this voter confidence by expanding his efforts to improve court operations and by taking a leadership role in worthwhile community service projects.
Among the highlights of his four years as Chief Judge was the move into a new courthouse, the expansion of educational programs for Dearborn students, major upgrades in the court’s computer system and the creation of a new Juvenile Division which allows cases involving Dearborn youngsters to be handled locally rather than in downtown Detroit.
Hultgren’s deep civic involvement saw him receive the coveted Detroit College of
Business Distinguished Community Service Award for 1998 and the Edgar A. Guest Masonic Award for Community Service in 1999. On an annual basis that commitment to his profession and community is expressed through participation in the Optimist Club essay contest, Eagle Scout Court of Honor, reading to elementary students and mentoring student interns.
A past-president of the Dearborn Centurions, Hultgren is a 32-year member of the Dearborn Rotary Club and has chaired its annual Law Day essay contest for students. He also is treasurer of the Edsel Ford Varsity Alumni Club and an avid supporter of both the Dearborn Animal Shelter and the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life event.
The Edsel Ford High School graduate received his B.A. degree from Hope College in 1966 and his law degree from Wayne State University in 1969.
Following three years with Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services, he joined the city’s legal department in 1972 and was promoted to City Attorney on January 1, 1975.
The next 17 years saw him establish a new longevity record for local city attorneys and earn national recognition while serving under Mayors Orville L. Hubbard, John B. O’Reilly, Sr., and Michael A. Guido.
Hultgren successfully represented the City of Dearborn in cases held before the Wayne County Circuit Court, the Michigan Court of Appeals, the Michigan Supreme Court and the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.
In 1992, his final year with the city, Hultgren was the recipient of the Michigan Municipal League’s annual “Distinguished Municipal Attorney” award and the Washington- based National Institute of Municipal Officers’ “Outstanding Public Service by a Municipal Attorney” award.
Professionally, Hultgren’s memberships include the Dearborn Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and the American Judges Association.
